Makario Stadium

Makario Stadium sits in the Engomi district of Nicosia at the crossroads of Evagorou Avenue and Makariou III Avenue. It is not the city’s largest venue anymore — the New GSP Stadium took that title when it opened in 1999 — but you can still see the old shape of things here. A synthetic track runs around the pitch; two stands rise on either side of the field. The weight of the years is visible in the concrete.

It was built between 1973 and 1978, with construction paused during the 1974 Turkish invasion, and opened in 1978. The stadium was named after Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus, who died in 1977 before its completion. Floodlights were installed in 1977, but they did not last long. It hosted the 1979–80 Cypriot Cup final, where Omonia beat Alki Larnaca 3–1, and the 1989 Games of the Small States of Europe. The attendance record is 30,000 for a 1985–86 European Cup match between Omonia Nicosia and Anderlecht on November 6, 1985.

In April 2025, the Cyprus Sports Organisation announced a €40 million renovation plan to transform it into a modern indoor arena, scheduled to close in September 2025, though later reports indicated the full plan was abandoned for a scaled-back project.
