Nyagatare Stadium

Nyagatare Stadium stands in the administrative centre of Nyagatare District, built as part of a coordinated push to develop sport in Rwanda’s Eastern Province. The project was financed on a loan that each of the three districts—Bugesera, Ngoma, and Nyagatare—agreed to repay over five years. Construction was carried out by the China Road and Bridge Corporation between 2018 and 2019, with the official opening taking place on July 9, 2022. The ceremony was marked by a friendly match between Sunrise FC and APR FC.

Capacity figures vary across sources: the original 2019 plan specified 3,000 seats, a 2024 Rwanda Housing Authority report states 4,000 people, while other sources list 5,000 or 1,000 (specifically for football matches). The ground features an artificial turf playing surface alongside a running track for athletics, volleyball and basketball courts, and a tennis court. Sunrise FC is the primary home team, though they initially lacked a license to host games there.

The stadium has also hosted non-sporting events, including a University of Rwanda graduation ceremony for 5,702 graduates and an event to end teenage pregnancies attended by 2,000+ youth. Rwandan addresses typically use the administrative hierarchy (District → Sector → Cell → Village) rather than street names, so no specific street address was found. The stadium is sometimes confused with a separate smaller venue called Golgotha Stadium with a capacity of 1,000-3,000, but sources indicate these names refer to the same facility.
