The facility has lived through several phases. It was originally constructed alongside the city hall, though the exact year remains a matter of debate between sources. The first major change came in 2008, when the stadium was renovated for the National Sports Week. More recently, a substantial rehabilitation funded by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing was completed in early 2025.
Borneo FC have called this ground home since 2014, replacing Putra Samarinda after a quarter of a century in the city. The change in tenure coincided with a steady growth in support. Since then, the crowd has grown steadily, with matches against visiting sides like Persib Bandung drawing over 11,000 people.
