Andrej Verlič set up HDK Maribor in 1993.
The senior men's team has never taken the Slovenian championship, a title that has passed only between HK Olimpija, HK Jesenice, and HK Acroni Jesenice. Where Maribor made its mark was the Slohokej Liga, which it won outright in its first ever season, 2009–10, beating HK Partizan in the final. A bronze followed in 2010–11, then a runner-up finish the year after.
The women's side has told a different story entirely. HDK Maribor Lisičke has taken the Slovenian Women's Hockey League title 17 times.
Among the players who passed through the club, Jan Muršak went on to the NHL, while Marko Ferlež remains the club's all-time leading scorer. Mitja Robar wore the national team jersey before returning to serve as club president.
