Persiraja Banda Aceh

Persiraja have spent recent seasons shuttling between the second tier and relegation trouble, the club's most recent drop coming in 2021-22. What holds the club to its city is older than any of those results.

The team began life in 1957 as Persib Banda before taking the name Persiraja, and its one true peak came in 1980, when it beat Persipura Jayapura 3-1 to win the Perserikatan title.

No result explains Persiraja's standing in Aceh better than what happened in 2004. The tsunami that struck the province that December took the life of Irwansyah, the striker whose name still carries weight among people who remember the team from before. A decade later, the death of forward Akli Fairuz in 2014 hung over the fixture Aceh cares about most, the Classic Aceh Derby against PSAP Sigli, and turned an already fierce rivalry into something heavier. In 2020 the club stopped playing altogether for a stretch, pulled apart by a dispute with the league operator over unpaid hotel bills, a reminder of how thin the financial margins run outside Indonesia's biggest cities.

Andik Vermansah, the national team midfielder who captains the side now, gives supporters something to build the current campaign around, even as the club works to stay clear of the drop zone it has known too well this decade.

Home is Stadion Harapan Bangsa, which holds 45,000 in orange and black when it fills, though Persiraja have also turned out at the smaller Dimurthala Stadium when the bigger ground was not needed. Either way, it is Banda Aceh's team that walks out, under the name Laskar Rencong.
