On 26 October 2008 Young Africans and Simba met in the Dar es Salaam Derby and 70,000 people got in. Both clubs have played here since it opened, as has the Tanzania national team.
Beijing Construction Engineering Group put the stadium up between July 2005 and June 2007, on the Temeke side of the city; it opened on 1 September 2007 with a 2010 World Cup qualifier between Tanzania and Uganda. The national ground it succeeded, Uhuru Stadium, was demolished. The playing surface is hybrid — natural grass reinforced with synthetic fibre.
The 2023–24 rebuild cost 31 billion Tanzanian shillings , around $12.6m, and was aimed at FIFA Grade A and CAF requirements: all 60,000 seats replaced, VAR installed, new scoreboards, VIP areas and dressing rooms reworked, a platform built for journalists, and the running track and floodlighting restored.
Benjamin Mkapa, a former president of Tanzania, died on 23 July 2020. President John Magufuli ordered the ground renamed in his honour.
