Dan Anyiam Stadium
Owerri, Nigeria
Dan Anyiam Stadium sits off Wetheral Road in Owerri. Built in the late 1970s, it sits near the heart of the municipal area. The grass is natural, cut flat and green. During the redevelopment of 2019 and 2020, the pitch was pulled up and replaced. Floodlights went up alongside it, casting a sharp, white light over the stands when the sun went down.
Heartland FC call this place home. They do not rush. They arrive early. They buy tickets and then they walk.
The ground also remembers bigger nights. The final of the CAF Champions League saw Heartland defeat TP Mazembe in front of a full house. They stayed until the whistle blew. It is a multipurpose space, but football is the language spoken here. You do not need a guide to find your seat. You just need to follow the noise. The players run onto the pitch and they know they are in Owerri. The ground does not hide its age. It wears it lightly.
