Doha Sport Stadium
Doha, Qatar
Formerly: Old Doha Stadium, Old Stadium, Doha Stadium
The ground sits near the Corniche at the junction of Jabr bin Mohd Street and Al Dostour Street. It has been here since 1962, when it opened as the first football stadium in the Arabian Gulf region to use natural grass.
The surface remains natural turf. The pitch is set against a backdrop of red and white seating in the background stands. The capacity is small, often cited at 2,000 or 3,000, though crowds have gathered in numbers far exceeding those figures on special occasions.
The stadium saw a major renovation that concluded on March 28, 2019. The rebuild modernised the floodlights and the pavilion while keeping the structure’s original scale. It currently hosts Al-Waab SC in the Qatari Second Division. Before that, it was the home of Al Ahli SC.
The most famous night here was February 14, 1973. Santos FC, led by Pelé, played a friendly against Al Ahli SC. Santos won 3–0. The official capacity was listed as 2,000, but 12,000 spectators turned up, many scaling the fences to watch. Muhammad Ali also performed here in 1971.
