There is a distinct lack of natural grass here; the surface is uniform and synthetic, a 'Geo-tech pitch' installed during the facility's most recent overhaul.

Its identity shifted permanently in 2002, when it shed the name Aba Township Stadium following a continental triumph by the local club. Before that, it sat quietly for a decade, but the 2007 rebuild by Julius Berger Nigeria pushed it up to Category 4 standards. Yet the true transformation came later, with the 2018 expansion funded by the state government and the club. This work doubled the capacity to 16,000.

The stadium serves as the fortress for Enyimba FC, a team that has played out of this location since its inception. It has hosted significant fixtures, including CAF Champions League matches against teams like Raja Casablanca and crucial Nigeria Professional Football League deciders.
