Estadio Nuevo Colombino
Huelva, Spain
New Colombino replaced the old ground in 2001, when the town’s club moved in from the Municipal.
The seats are blue and white, arranged in blocks that do not quite match the rhythm of the concrete. You can see the sea from the road outside, and the trees that line the embankment. The floodlights are high up on poles, looking old-fashioned against the modern roof. The pitch is natural grass, the kind that needs cutting and watering, not the artificial surface found at the bigger grounds in the country. There is no heating system for the turf; the winter matches are played on cold ground.
The club has been in and out of the top flight since the turn of the millennium, and the stadium has seen both the noise of promotion and the silence of relegation. The capacity is 21,670, a number that does not mean much to anyone outside the town. The record crowd was 18,158 for a match against Córdoba in 2024, which was not a cup final but a game that mattered to the people watching. The Spain national team has played here, against Mexico and Peru, matches that drew more interest than the local league games. The women’s team played their first official match in the top division here in 2017.
The roof covers three sides, leaving the fourth end open to the wind that comes off the water. The concourses are narrow, the toilets are few, and the food is sold from counters under the seating. It is a working ground, not a monument. The maintenance plan announced in 2025 was for structural repairs and safety upgrades, the kind of work that keeps a building standing rather than making it shine. There are no plans for expansion, no proposals to turn it into a multi-purpose venue. It is a football stadium in a city on the coast, and that is all it needs to be.
