The ground has been home to the ice hockey team Iisalmen Peli-Karhut (IPK). When the club climbed the Finnish tiers to reach the Mestis league, the arena had to adapt. A renovation in 2016 brought the facilities up to scratch, a necessary investment that kept the team playing at this specific site. The surface remains natural ice, a standard choice for a town of this size, and the capacity sits at a modest 1,300, meaning every seat is close to the action. The atmosphere inside is shaped by this intimacy; the stands are not distant tiers but a surrounding wall of noise. The away end never stopped, a common occurrence in the Mestis, where the rivalry between local clubs carries weight.

Recent years have seen the building change again. In autumn 2024, a new dynamic maintenance building was delivered to replace older facilities, a temporary measure while a larger project for a new ice hall is studied. For now, Kankaan jäähalli remains the heart of winter sport in the region. It hosts not just the senior team, but the junior squads as well, feeding the next generation of players. The arena does not compete with the big stadiums in the capital; it serves its own purpose, a steady presence in Untamonkatu 7 where the history between the local teams adds an edge to every match.
