Mogadishu Stadium

The ground presents a stark contrast between its sporting purpose and its history.

The venue held the largest crowd in its history on July 17, 2021, when 65,000 spectators filled the concrete tiers for a Somali Premier League fixture. It was the first time the ground had been packed since 2004.

Mogadishu Stadium opened in 1977 under the administration of President Siad Barre, who used the arena for political rallies and military parades as much as for sport. During the conflict, Ugandan troops stationed with the African Union Peacekeepers occupied the stands before vacating the premises in 2018. The ground has hosted significant events since, including a national independence celebration in 2020 and an exhibition match in May 2025 featuring African legends. The stadium remains under the management of the Somali Football Federation, a central point in the city’s sporting landscape despite its scarred appearance.
