Nordhessen Arena

Kassel, Germany

The Auestadion sits in the Fulda floodplain south of Kassel. Built from the rubble of the Second World War, the structure opened on 23 August 1953 with a main grandstand that held 2,200 spectators. That original stand, with its cantilevered steel roof, stood until 2010, when it was found structurally unsound and replaced.

The capacity has grown to 18,737, a figure reached after renovations between 2003 and 2010. The current configuration sees 8,700 seated places and 10,000 standing places. The primary tenant, KSV Hessen Kassel, plays on natural grass, which is cut with precision, though the pitch lacks heating. The highest attendance ever recorded was 37,000 on 6 June 1964 for a Regionalliga playoff against Hannover 96. A concert during the 1964 Hessentag festival drew an estimated 50,000, but no official count exists for that event.

The stadium has never carried a sponsorship name, remaining the Auestadion since its opening. The main stand’s reconstruction in 2010 by Bremer AG from Paderborn modernised the seating, while the side stands, added during the 1983–1993 renovations, retain the original design by Norbert Harle.
