Sani Abacha Stadium

The ground sits near the Kofar Mata gate. It opened in 1998, built by the military administration of General Sani Abacha, who was born in Kano. It was named after its builder upon completion and kept that name ever since.

Its sporting life is anchored in the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). It hosted seven matches during that tournament, including a Quarter-Final between Egypt and Tunisia. The highest recorded attendance was 30,000 for the Egypt versus Senegal match on January 28, 2000. Other notable matches included Egypt’s 2-0 victory over Zambia and a 4-2 win against Burkina Faso. Before that, it held matches during the 1997 FIFA U-17 World Cup and the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship, where Nigeria defeated Ireland on penalties in the Round of 16.

The surface was natural grass for decades, though it was previously artificial turf which was replaced during a renovation in 2024. That replacement cost N276.7 million, approved by the Kano State Executive Council. The stadium features floodlights and an electronic scoreboard, but also a mosque within the complex, a feature that reflects its local setting.

For a long time, it was the home ground of Kano Pillars F.C. in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). However, the club was banned from playing here in 2021/2022 due to crowd violence and relocated to Katsina and Abuja. Kano Pillars returned in November 2024 after renovations were completed. It has also hosted international friendlies and qualifiers, such as Nigeria versus Angola in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers and Nigeria versus Benin in the CHAN 2017.
