Sparekassen Danmark Isarena
Aalborg, Denmark
Formerly: Jutlander Bank Arena, Sparekassen Vendsyssel Arena
The Gigantium Isarena sits in a corner of the Aalborg Øst district. It is a distinct building, not the glittering concert hall that draws attention to the waterfront.
Capacity figures often confuse the issue. The card lists 6,000, but that is a number arrived at only recently. For years, the space was constrained by fire safety rules written for music gigs, forcing a limit closer to 3,200 seated. The restriction was lifted in April 2023, allowing the club to reclassify standing areas and balcony space. Inside, the air is cold and the boards glow with LED panels installed for the 2021/2022 season. The players move on artificial ice, a smooth surface that does not care about the weather outside.
The name on the wall changes with the money. It was the Jutlander Bank Arena until the end of the 2020/2021 season. When the bank merged with Sparekassen Vendsyssel to become Sparekassen Danmark, the letters changed again. The team that calls it home, the Aalborg Pirates, plays in the Metal Ligaen. They have hosted the Metal Final4, a knockout tournament that sensed blood in the rivalry between the Danish clubs. A decisive playoff Game 7 was sold out, though no one has bothered to record exactly how many bodies filled those yellow seats.
The venue is not for show. The lights are bright, the ice is cold, and the players come to play.
