Groupe Guicopres confirmed the work includes a new natural grass pitch with modern drainage, a detail that explicitly denies earlier rumours of synthetic turf. The aim is to meet the strict homologation standards of the Confederation of African Football. The capacity is currently set at 25,000.

The ground serves as the primary home for **Horoya AC**. **Hafia FC**, a rival local club, also utilises the space for its biggest derbies and cup matches, drawn by the sheer size of the enclosure compared to their own smaller grounds. The pitch remains natural grass.

On September 28, 2009, the ground became the site of a massacre of opposition protesters, an event that the International Criminal Court is currently investigating. The name now carries a weight that goes beyond sport.
