Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui

Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui is a bowl of concrete and plastic, and what you see in the photograph is largely what there is: banks of yellow and orange seats, two tall floodlight masts, and a screen that hangs above the far end.

It opened in 1973, soon after independence, and was renamed in honour of Mohamed Hamlaoui, a militant who died in the war. The capacity now stands at 22,968 after a rebuild finished in 2022 for the African Nations Championship; the money came from the state and the work included new entrances and electronic ticketing. The stadium hosts group games and knockout matches for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and has seen its bright side come through when the Nigerian Football Federation was fined for fielding an ineligible player in a 2017 qualifier.

The club, CS Constantine, still calls it home, and the ground sits between the Sidi Mabrouk bridge and the train station, where the city meets the plateau.
