Turnbull Ground

The Turnbull Ground sits on land that Wilfred Oswald Turnbull bought to keep the local cricket club playing. The ground opened in 1929, not long after the amalgamation that formed the football side. Turnbull paid for the fencing, the changing rooms, and the ambulance hut himself.

The main stand is where the ground has changed most recently. In January 2025, the club pulled the safety certificate to save money. They removed nine seats from the covered area to sit below the 500-seat threshold. The club’s CEO said the effective capacity is now less than 1,400, though the concrete remains built for 3,500.

The history of the place is written in the cup ties. Whitby Town pulled off a comeback against Halifax Town in the 1980s, coming from two goals down to win 3–2. They hosted Plymouth Argyle in 2001, a match televised by BBC Match of the Day, which ended in a 1–1 draw. They also drew Hull City in 1996, a game that required a replay at Boothferry Park because of crowd concerns.

The pitch itself is natural grass, measuring 105m x 68m. A sustainable watering system with a 15,000-litre rainwater collection tank was installed in 2022.

The club won the 1997 FA Carlsberg Vase Final against North Ferriby United at Wembley. More recently, they beat Middlesbrough 4–3 in a North Riding Senior Cup Semi-Final in 2017. The address is Upgang Lane, Whitby, YO21 3HZ.
