The A1 Ethniki, currently branded as the Volleyleague, stands as the premier men’s volleyball championship in Greece. Organised by the Hellenic Volleyball Federation (EOPE), the competition traces its lineage back to the Panhellenic Championship of 1928. It occupies the apex of the national pyramid, sitting above the Pre League and the A2 Ethniki. The structure replaced an earlier two-tier system, establishing a clear three-level hierarchy for domestic play.
The current season features ten clubs competing in a double round-robin format. Each side faces every opponent twice, resulting in 18 regular season matches per team. Following this phase, the top-placed teams advance to a playoff stage comprising quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. These decisive series operate on a best-of-five basis. The bottom finishesers face relegation to the Pre League, while the Pre League champion earns promotion to the top flight. Winners of the regional groups in the A2 Ethniki enter promotion tournaments to reach the second tier.
Olympiacos holds the record for the most titles in the competition’s history. As of the 2023–24 season, the Piraeus club secured 32 championships, surpassing Panathinaikos on 22 and AEK Athens on 14. Olympiacos also captured eight consecutive titles between 1986–87 and 1993–94. Competitors include Flisvos, Foinikas Syroy, Kifisia, OFI, AO Kalamata, and AONS Milon. European qualification routes through league performance, with the champion entering the CEV Champions League and the runner-up typically securing a spot in the CEV Cup. The league title remains the primary measure of domestic supremacy, distinct from the separate Greek Volleyball Cup knockout tournament.
