About

The Israeli Men's Volleyball Premier League (Ligat HaAl) serves as the highest level of competition for men’s volleyball in the country. Established in 1956 by the Israel Volleyball Association (IVA), the tournament has evolved significantly over nearly seven decades. After operating as the National League (HaLiga HaArtzit) from its inception until 1959, and subsequently as the National League (HaLiga HaLeumit) until 1999, it adopted its current Premier League designation in 1999. A period between 2011 and 2014 saw it sponsored by the Winner lottery, under the name Winer League.

The competition structure comprises 10 teams engaged in a double round-robin regular season. The eight highest-placed squads advance to playoffs, where quarterfinals and semifinals are contested as best-of-3 series, with the championship decided by a best-of-5 final. Movement between tiers is possible with the second-tier National League, subject to financial licensing criteria imposed by the IVA.

Hapoel Mate Asher and Maccabi Tel Aviv share the record for the most titles, each holding 16 victories. Maccabi Tel Aviv claimed the most recent championship in the 2023–24 season after defeating Hapoel Mate Asher in the finals. The club also achieved an undefeated season during 2009–10. Due to Israel's geopolitical position, local clubs participate in European competitions through the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV), including the CEV Champions League, despite the nation being located in Asia. This arrangement creates long travel distances for participating teams.
