Match report

Columbus Crew Edge Atlas in League Cup Group Stage Clash

Columbus Crew secured a 3-1 victory over Atlas in the League Cup Group Stage on August 4th, 2026. The result came despite Atlas controlling more of the ball, 56 per cent to 44 per cent. And here's the thing — you can have possession without creating much of value. The visitors had eight shots off target and only two on, while Columbus hit the frame five times.

Axel Ruvalcaba opened the scoring for Atlas in the 28th minute before Szymon Zawadzki responded just before the break. Zawadzki's goal in the 45+2 minute moment gave the hosts momentum, and he added a second from the penalty spot later. By then, Columbus had already seen C. Adams sent off in the 46th minute, but the numerical disadvantage didn't derail their response. The own goal that followed complicated matters further.

What stood out was Columbus's clinical edge. They created three big chances compared to Atlas's one, and converted ruthlessly when opportunities arose. The visitors attempted 21 crosses but only landed four, while Columbus kept things tighter with 13 attempts and four successes. To be fair, Atlas did generate more attacks — 119 against 87 — but without penetration in the final third, those numbers meant little.

The own goal in the 67th minute proved pivotal. Zawadzki had already netted from the spot in the 51st minute, and this second contribution effectively sealed the result. Columbus made tactical adjustments throughout, bringing on Duk in the 62nd minute and L. Esteves in the 73rd. Atlas responded with dual substitutions in the 82nd minute, but the window had closed.

Statistics told a familiar story. Columbus completed 403 of 468 passes with 11 successful tackles, while Atlas managed 545 of 611 with 15 tackles. The difference emerged in defensive discipline — Columbus conceded only 10 fouls compared to Atlas's 11, and kept their shape better. Shots accuracy showed the gulf: Columbus hit 100 per cent of players who attempted on target, Atlas managed just 13 per cent.

The victory matters for Columbus's standing in the group. They arrive with mixed form — a 2-2 draw with Inter Miami, a 2-1 win over Cincinnati, and a 1-2 loss to New York City in recent outings. Atlas's trajectory looks less promising, coming off a 0-2 defeat to Monterrey after beating Santos Laguna. This result shifts the balance, and the hosts now fancy their chances of progressing.
