Ikorodu City took the opening day of the NPFL regular season by storm, beating Ranchers Biz 3-1 at home on Saturday. The visitors had their chances but could not match the hosts' intensity once the game opened up. And here's the thing — it was never really in doubt after the first half.
C. Okorie gave Ikorodu the lead in the seventh minute, a quick strike that set the tone for what followed. Ranchers responded with a goal of their own through D. Umar at the 30-minute mark, but the hosts reclaimed the advantage just before the break. A. Ayodeji headed in at 45-plus-5 to restore the two-goal cushion.
By then the match had settled into a rhythm only the visitors could not quite find. Ikorodu dominated possession at 62 per cent and threw 128 attacks against 93 from their opponents. Ranchers managed only four shots on target throughout, while the hosts sent seven on target and finished with eight wide.
The second half brought more discipline issues for the visitors. They collected three yellow cards compared to one for the hosts, and then saw a player sent off in the 86th minute. F. Salami added a fourth goal for Ikorodu in the 87th, capitalising on the numerical advantage.
To be fair, the statistics tell only part of the story. The hosts were clinical when it mattered, converting their dominance into goals. Ranchers ran out of games to salvage anything after the red card and the late goal combined to end any hopes of a comeback.
The result leaves Ikorodu City unbeaten after their opening fixture, while Ranchers Biz have started the campaign with a defeat. Both sides have yet to accumulate points in the table, but this one was decided in moments — not minutes.
