Wolfsburg Women beat Werder Bremen 3:2 in the Frauen-Bundesliga on Saturday at the AOС Stadium. The result leaves the hosts three points clear at the top of the table after three games, while Werder drop a point and remain fifth with six.
Luna Vanzeir opened the scoring early, finding the net in the 14th minute. She collected a yellow card nine minutes later as Werder pressed back. By then the visitors were pinned back, but they found a way through in the 64th minute when Elena Dhont equalised.
M. Alber restored Wolfsburg's lead in the 57th minute, just before the hosts brought on Isabella Jaron and Lilli Purtscheller. The game swung again in the 88th minute when Camilla Kuver added a third, and here's the thing — Werder had pulled one back and were still pushing forward.
Wolfsburg dominated territory with 108 attacks to 50 and held 63 per cent of possession. They registered six shots on target from 20 attempts, while the visitors hit seven on target from eight attempts. Werder were more clinical, but Wolfsburg created enough to make life awkward.
Three substitutions for the home side and two for the visitors were made in the second half as both managers managed their resources. The yellow cards — two for Werder and one for Wolfsburg — told of a match that got physical in the middle third.
The win keeps Wolfsburg unbeaten after a mixed week that included a heavy defeat to Inter Milan and a narrow victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Werder's record of two wins and one loss remains unchanged, but the gap to the leaders has grown to three points.
