About the player
Axel Borgmann came through Schalke's academy after starting out at TuSpo Saarn and moving through MSV Duisburg's youth ranks, and it was at Schalke that he picked up a German U-19 Championship medal in the 2011/12 season before working his way into the club's second team. His move away from the Ruhr paid off at FC Vaduz, where three seasons produced 84 appearances. A short spell at VVV-Venlo followed before he signed for Energie Cottbus on a free transfer in August 2019.
Cottbus has become the defining chapter of his career. He was handed the captain's armband in 2021, and the following year the club's supporters voted him Energie Cottbus Player of the Year.
There is no record of a senior call-up to the German national team, so his football has been built entirely at club level, from the academy grounding at Schalke through to the leadership role he now holds at Cottbus.
