About the player
Jens Toornstra came through the youth ranks at Alphense Boys before joining the professional setup at ADO Den Haag in 2009, where he made his senior debut. A move to FC Utrecht in January 2013 raised his profile, and in August 2014 Feyenoord paid €3.5 million to bring him to Rotterdam, a transfer that shaped the next eight years of his career.
At Feyenoord, Toornstra had his best individual season in 2016/17, scoring 14 league goals in 34 appearances as the club won the Eredivisie title. He added two KNVB Cup wins, in 2015/16 and 2017/18, and lifted the Johan Cruijff Shield in both 2017 and 2018. In 2022, he reached the UEFA Europa Conference League final with Feyenoord.
He left Feyenoord in 2022 to return to FC Utrecht on a free transfer. In January 2023, he scored against his former club, a goal that extended a personal record of scoring in 13 consecutive professional seasons. He was capped four times by the Netherlands national team between 2013 and 2017.
Toornstra's form at Feyenoord earned him recognition beyond the club: he was named in the FIFA 17 Eredivisie Team of the Season and the Football Oranje Team of the Season for 2016/17.
