Luca Unbehaun

Luca Unbehaun came through Borussia Dortmund's academy after moving there as a teenager from VfL Bochum, and by 2019 he had been pulled into the first-team squad. He never made a senior appearance for Dortmund, though, spending the 2020 to 2023 period as the regular goalkeeper for the club's reserve side, Borussia Dortmund II, where he made 59 appearances. His most eye-catching moment came earlier still, in 2018, when he kept goal for Germany's under-17s in the final of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and picked up the Fritz Walter Medal in Bronze for his age group, a season that also earned him a place on The Guardian's "Next Generation" list of prospects to watch.

With his path at Dortmund blocked, Unbehaun left on a free transfer to SC Verl in 2023 and made 33 appearances in the 2023–2024 season. A year later he moved to the Netherlands, joining FC Emmen in the Eerste Divisie, where he established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper and went on to make 69 appearances. His performances in Emmen's goal led to interest from Hansa Rostock, and he agreed to join the 3. Liga club on a free transfer, a move his former Dortmund teammate Franz Pfanne, now Rostock's sporting director, helped bring about.

Unbehaun has represented Germany at various youth levels beyond the under-17s, including the under-16, under-18 and under-20 sides, without adding a senior cap.
