About the player
Marcel Lotka made his Bundesliga debut on 26 February 2022, starting for Hertha BSC against SC Freiburg after an injury crisis left the club short of goalkeeping options. He went on to start three more league matches that season, against Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart.
The move that followed was more eventful than anything he did on the pitch. Lotka had already agreed to join Borussia Dortmund when Hertha triggered an option to extend his contract, setting off a dispute between the two clubs that dragged on before being settled in May 2022 with Hertha securing a sell-on clause. He arrived at Dortmund on a free transfer that March, but the move did not translate into first-team football. He served as a backup goalkeeper for the senior side without making a single appearance for BVB, and his contract ran out at the end of June 2025.
He moved on again on a free transfer, joining Fortuna Düsseldorf in July 2025 as the club's third-choice goalkeeper. Before that, his path through German football had taken him from Duisburg's own MSV through Schalke 04, Rot-Weiss Essen and Bayer Leverkusen at youth level. It is a career built largely in reserve teams and understudy roles, punctuated by that one month of first-team football at Hertha.
