About the player
Roberto Fernández Urbieta came through the academy at Club Guaraní, which he joined in 2013, and made his professional debut in the Paraguayan Primera División in 2019. He made around 68 league appearances and scored twice, while also featuring in the Copa Libertadores in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Guaraní finished as runners-up in the Paraguayan championship in both 2020 and 2021 during his time at the club.
In July 2022 the defender moved to FC Dynamo Moscow for a reported fee of €3.0 million, signing a contract running until 2029. He made his Russian Premier League debut for the club that same month, against FC Fakel Voronezh. He has passed 70 league appearances and scoring 6 goals, and was part of the Dynamo squad that took bronze in the Russian Premier League in the 2023/2024 season.
Fernández has represented Paraguay at youth level, with 12 caps for the U17 side, four for the U20s and one for the U23s. He has twice been called up to the senior national team, in September 2022 and again in March 2024.
