Académica do Lobito

The idea started with a name: Académica da Chilimba, taken from the neighbourhood in Lobito where Geraldo Guiado and a handful of associates put the club together on 17 March 1970. Sonangol's sponsorship arrived in 1981 and pulled the club into the oil company's orbit for good. The academic root never left it, though — "Os Estudantes" stuck as a nickname long after the club stopped being anyone's student side.

Everything after has been a longer climb back toward that level, including a 2014 second-division title that returned them to the top flight and a first-ever cup final in 2023, lost 3–0 to Petro de Luanda.

Paulão carried the captain's armband through much of that stretch and wore it for the Palancas Negras as well, before his death in 2021. Off the pitch, the 2023 match-fixing suspension handed to coach Agostinho Tramagal by the Angolan Football Federation.

Provincial pride sharpens all of it. Wiliete, thirty kilometres away in Benguela city, is the name that turns any fixture into the Derby da Benguela.
