Arosa

In the summer of 1949 a club four years old and playing out of a fishing town on the Ría de Arousa found itself in the Segunda División.

What followed was a long career in the regional and national lower divisions, broken by two promotions won from the Regional Preferente de Galicia — in 1974–75 and again in 2000–01 — each of which put the club back in the national leagues. The one outright national title came in 1992–93, when Arosa took Group I of the Tercera División and went up to Segunda División B.

Vilagarcía de Arousa has supplied its own players to the side. Manolo Abalo, born in the town in 1956, spent the 1976–77 season with Arosa before Sporting de Gijón took him; he went on to be capped by Spain and travelled to the 1982 World Cup. He is now the club's president. Fernando Lezcano never left at all — 518 appearances.

The most recent step up came in 2023–24. Arosa finished third in Group 1 of Tercera RFEF, went into the play-offs, beat UD Ourense in the semi-final and came out of it in Segunda RFEF.

The red-and-white checks that give the side their nickname, the Harlequins, are worn at Estadio A Lomba, a 5,000-capacity municipal ground on the edge of the town. Arosa do not have it to themselves: Atlético Arousana, the local rivals, play there too. The derby has never acquired a name of its own.
