Cotonou follows its football mostly through the men's national side. Les Amazones, as Benin's under-20 women are known, opened their tournament in Poland with a 2-2 draw against Mexico in a Group A that also held Argentina and the hosts.
The team's competitive record goes back to March 2006, when a qualifying match against DR Congo marked its first appearance on the books, and produced Romaine Gandonou, the forward who scored both Benin goals against Mexico. She had already finished top scorer in qualifying with 14 goals and had by then also been called into the senior national team.
At home the side plays in green and yellow at the Stade de l'Amitié Général Mathieu Kérékou in Cotonou, built to hold 35,000.
