Bodø / Glimt U19

The night in 2014 that Bodø/Glimt's under-19s beat Skeid Oslo to win the Norwegian Youth Cup remains the clearest piece of silverware the youth side can point to on its own, and it came only three years after Glimt-Akademiet had been set up in 2011 to put proper structure behind player development in Bodø. Within a decade, that structure had sent Jens Petter Hauge, Patrick Berg and Fredrik André Bjørkan through to the first team.

The U19s now play in the Nasjonal U19 Champions League and have tested themselves against academy sides from Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Juventus in the UEFA Youth League, when the senior club itself had won only one Norwegian Cup, back in 1975. Home matches are played at Aspmyra, in front of stands that hold just over 8,000, a scale that still suits a youth fixture even as the senior team has outgrown it in ambition.

What has not changed is where the rivalry sits. The younger sides carry the same fixture that defines the club further up the pyramid: Tromsø IL, in what is known locally as the Battle for Northern Norway, a contest rooted less in recent form than in the fact that these are the two clubs the whole region measures itself against.
