«The Chats»
A cup run in 1888–89 carried Chatham Town to the FA Cup quarter-finals. The Football Association took note, and from then on ruled that FA Cup ties had to be staged on enclosed grounds.
The side itself had been put together six years earlier, in 1882, when Rochester Invicta merged with the football team of the Royal Engineers Band under the name Chatham United. The Chatham Town name did not arrive until 1947, and even then the local council intervened again in 1974, ordering the club to play as Medway F.C. for five seasons before Chatham Town returned in 1979.
but the club's sharpest recent run came without any of them: back-to-back promotions in 2021–22 and 2022–23, first through the Southern Counties East League and then the Isthmian League South East Division, lifted The Chats into the Isthmian Premier Division.
Bobby Harrison, born in Chatham, scored more than 200 goals for the club across the 1970s and 1980s and died in 1987. The Bauvill Stadium that his goals were scored on holds 3,000, five hundred of them seated.
