Djerv

A coin decided what a football match could not settle. In the quarter-finals of the first Norgesserien, in 1938, Djerv and Viking finished 6-6, and the tie went to a toss that Djerv won. The reprieve did not last long: in the semi-final they lost 3-2 to Lyn, having gone through their own qualifying group without dropping a point.

Boys from the Møhlenpris district of Bergen put the club together in 1913, and by the interwar years it stood level with SK Brann as the city's leading side. The four seasons that followed in the top flight — 1937-38, 1938-39, and a 1939-40 campaign abandoned after the German occupation, closed out by a last appearance in 1947-48 — brought no trophy.

Egil Austbø came through the youth ranks until 1965 and then left for Brann, where he captained the side, won the Norwegian Cup in 1976 and was capped for Norway — a path out of Møhlenpris that Djerv itself never completed.

Ice hockey carried the name further than football did for a while. Djerv spent four seasons in the top-flight 1. Divisjon from 1979, finishing fourth in 1982-83, before money ran out in 1985 and the section merged into Bergen/Djerv. That club stayed in the top division until it went bankrupt in 1990, and Djerv has fielded no ice hockey side since. Bjørn "Botta" Skaare, the first Norwegian to play in the NHL, wore the merged club's shirt in its closing years.

Football has had a quieter recent history, sliding from the 3. divisjon in 2009 down to the 5. and 6. divisjon before working back up to the 4. divisjon by 2018.

The rivalry that mattered was always with Brann, the two Bergen clubs pulling at the same crowd through the 1930s — long before a club in Haugesund borrowed the Djerv name for itself and had to tack on a year, 1919, to keep the two apart.
