Luciano Acosta was named MLS's Most Valuable Player in 2023 and handed FC Cincinnati something the club had never held before: the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the best regular-season record in the competition.

Five years earlier there had been nothing to defend. The club started in 2016 in the USL, the country's second tier, and won that league outright in its third season. MLS took notice, and on 29 May 2018 awarded Cincinnati a franchise in the top flight, where it has played since 2019.

Pat Noonan took over as head coach in December 2021 and built the team that delivered the Shield two years later, with Brenner and Brandon Vazquez sharing the finishing that season, 18 league goals apiece.

The club plays at TQL Stadium, opened on 16 May 2021, where the supporters' group Die Innenstadt fills the Bailey end. Cincinnati's rivalry with Columbus Crew, contested as the Hell Is Real derby, is the fixture that decides bragging rights in Ohio.

Before any of that, in 2016 and 2017, Cincinnati's silverware was a friendly prize called the Queen City Cup, won both times against Charlotte Independence. The Supporters' Shield, in 2023, is the trophy the club now measures itself against: one.
