On 21 March 1998, more people packed into Kidsgrove Athletic's ground than at any match before or since: 1,903 turned out to watch the FA Vase semi-final against Tiverton Town. That season also brought the North West Counties Football League Premier Division title.

Founded in 1952, Kidsgrove built its identity in non-league football long before those Vase nights, working through the Burslem and Tunstall League and the Staffordshire County League in the early 1960s. The Staffordshire Senior Cup became something of a habit: five wins between 2003–04 and 2011–12.

Matt Rhead came through the Kidsgrove academy between 2004 and 2007, left to play for Mansfield Town and Lincoln City, and returned in 2024 as player-manager. Anthony Malbon did his scoring closer to home: 159 goals between 2014 and 2022 make him the club's record marksman.

The team, known as The Grove and playing in blue, competes now in the Northern Premier League Division One West, with two further FA Cup fourth qualifying round appearances, in 2011–12 and 2018–19, since that record night against Tiverton Town.
