Games are played at the Seagrave Training Ground, though the small capacity there means Premier League Cup fixtures sometimes move to Loughborough University's stadium instead. The team competes in Premier League 2 Division One and the Premier League Cup, sitting a tier below where its one piece of silverware was won: promotion as champions of Division Two in 2014–15, the same season the side also reached the semi-finals of the Premier League International Cup. Neither the Division One title nor the Premier League Cup has followed since.

The East Midlands Derby against Nottingham Forest carries down into the academy fixtures the way it does at first-team level, with Derby County and Notts County providing the other local needle. Among the current crop, Jeremy Monga has drawn the most attention, with Ben Nelson, Bade Aluko, Louis Page and Jake Evans also pushing to make the step their predecessors managed. That step, into a senior squad now settled in a different division to the one it occupied a decade ago, remains the job the U21s exist to prepare players for.
