Redditch United

The Valley Stadium holds five thousand, though only 250 of them sit; the rest stand around a ground that has watched Redditch United's fortunes rise and fall in roughly equal measure since the club settled there. It is not a place built for occasion football, and much of what happened at United came without much occasion at all.

The club started out as Redditch Town, took the name Redditch FC for a spell, and became Redditch United only in 1971 — by which point it had already been playing in Worcestershire for eight decades. Founding membership of the Alliance Premier League in 1979 looked like the high point of that history; instead it lasted a single season, United finishing bottom and dropping straight back to the Southern League. A brighter run followed in 1985–86, when they came back up as runners-up, only for relegation to catch them again in 1989. That same season brought the club's best FA Cup run, a First Round tie lost 3–1 to Merthyr Tydfil, and the pattern repeated in miniature through the 1990s and 2000s: a Western Division title in 2003–04 took them up to Conference North, and under owner Chris Swan they went straight back down in 2011, bottom of the table.

The nearest thing to a modern breakthrough came in 2015–16, when United finished second in the Southern League Premier Division and reached the play-off semi-final against Leamington — a tie settled on penalties, and lost. Stuart Fleetwood gave the following season an early highlight of his own, scoring four goals on his home debut. Matches with Bromsgrove Sporting and Halesowen Town carry the sharpest edge of any on the fixture list, the kind of local history that needs no explaining to anyone who has stood on the Valley Stadium terraces on derby day.
