Tanzania U20 Women

The rivalry has not always gone Tanzania's way — Ethiopia took the CECAFA U-20 title in 2021, 2023 and 2024, and Tanzania's own run in the competition tops out at a semi-final in 2022 and third place at the inaugural edition the year before. It is COSAFA, not CECAFA, where the trophy sits: Tanzania beat Zambia 2-1 in 2019 to win the first COSAFA U-20 Women's Championship played.

The side plays out of Dar es Salaam, drawing on the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium and its 60,000 seats when the fixture calls for it, though qualifiers and smaller ties have also been staged at the Azam Sports Complex in the same city. Green, yellow, blue and black run through the kit, taken straight off the national flag.

The team's real breakthrough came far from home. In 2026 Tanzania qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland for the first time, a tournament debut nine years removed from the side's first recorded international, a 2017 qualifier against Nigeria. They opened the World Cup against Brazil.

Winfrida Gerald scored that goal against Brazil, and it is her name that now travels furthest with the team — the forward who put Tanzania on the scoresheet the first time the country's under-20 women ever played at a World Cup.
