US Mondorf-les-bains

In May 2016 Mondorf reached the final of the Coupe du Luxembourg and lost it 1-0 to F91 Dudelange, the club that had won the domestic double more often than anyone. It remains the closest the town has come to a national trophy, and for a side whose only title arrived half a century earlier, in the second-tier Division of Honour of 1966, the near miss counted for more than most defeats.

That 1966 promotion delivered the club's first taste of the top flight, and it went better than the town had reason to expect: sixth place in 1966/67. The mark stood for 51 years. Mondorf matched it in 2017/18 and beat it only in 2025/26, when a third-place finish took the club into Europe for the first time. The reward was Dinamo Tbilisi in the first round of the 2026/27 UEFA Conference League.

The club began in 1915 as a youth side, which explains a good deal about how it has operated since — a supply line rather than a shop window, in a country where the top division has long been decided by two or three clubs from the industrial south.

Mondorf-les-Bains sits on the French border in the south-east corner of Luxembourg, a spa town of thermal baths and a casino, better known abroad for its water than its football. Germans call it Bad Mondorf. The Stade John Grün holds 3,600 — a figure that means something in a commune of a few thousand, and one the club filled to capacity rarely enough that Conference League night gave it a use. Green and white, on the edge of a town that people come to for the springs.
