Tomás Fernández had one match to win in Lima in 2008, and when Venezuela closed it out 3-2 the team went to Beijing as the only South American side beside Brazil and Peru to reach an Olympic tournament. They finished 11th there, but the qualification itself remains the high point for a programme the Federación Venezolana de Voleibol has run since 1937, when the federation was founded on 29 June of that year.

Before Beijing, the national side had built its record steadily rather than spectacularly: five bronze medals at the South American Championship, in 1985, 1987, 1993, 2001 and 2007, and two silver medals at the Bolivarian Games, in 2005 and 2009. Brazil has kept the region's gold medals out of reach; Venezuela's role in that period was to finish third often enough that the achievement stopped being a surprise.

The squad that travelled to China carried names Venezuelan volleyball still cites when the Olympic run comes up — Yessica Paz, Desiree Glod, Amarilis Villar among them — the generation that turned a Pre-Olympic Tournament win into the country's only Olympic volleyball appearance to date.

Known as La Vinotinto, a nickname borrowed from the football team, Venezuela has since chased qualification for the next major tournament without matching that 2008 run.
