Al Thumama Stadium
Doha, Qatar
The Al Thumama Stadium stands in the Al Thumama district of Doha, sitting on Al Quds Street. Its shape is a form borrowed from the gahfiya, the traditional woven cap worn in the Gulf.
The ground was built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a fact that still colours how the place feels. Roughly half of those upper seats were removed after the tournament and sent to developing nations, leaving a gap that now houses a boutique hotel and a sports clinic.
The space has already seen its share of heavy moments. Spain scored seven against Costa Rica here, while Morocco held their nerve to knock out Portugal in the quarter-final. France came through against Poland in the round of 16. The attendance record sits at 44,198, a number reached during that match between Morocco and Portugal. Since the tournament, Al-Arabi SC have taken up residence as the primary tenant, though the stadium still hosts select matches for the Qatar national football team.
