Almondvale Stadium

The Almondvale Stadium in Livingston stands apart from its peers not by grandeur, but by the weight of its civic origins. It was the final project of the Livingston Development Corporation before its mandate expired in 1997, built specifically to transform Meadowbank Thistle into the town’s new professional side. Ownership remains with West Lothian Council, a fact that keeps the ground firmly rooted in the community rather than a private portfolio.

The most striking feature is the playing surface. The pitch is covered in artificial 3G turf, laid down in 2018 to replace the natural grass. While many grounds maintain traditional surfaces, this one has fully embraced the synthetic modernisation.

The stadium’s history is marked by a single, enduring memory: the all-time attendance record of 10,112 set during a Scottish Premier League match against Rangers on 27 October 2001. That afternoon remains the high-water mark for the ground. The venue has also hosted significant cup finals, including the Scottish Challenge Cup in 2012 and 2013, and served as the temporary home for Hibernian W.F.C. during the 2021–22 season.

It is a functional, hardworking stadium. It does not hide behind the ghosts of its past; instead, it wears its sponsorship history openly. From the West Lothian Courier Stadium to the Tony Macaroni Arena, the current title, The Home of the Set Fare Arena, is likely to be short-lived, but the ground itself remains constant.
