The ground sits inside the Orange County Great Park, on land the City of Irvine owns and the park itself operates. It went up on the developer's account, FivePoint Communities behind the project and Heritage Fields El Toro, LLC as contractor, and opened to the public on 5 August 2017. The first professional match followed ten days later.

What is unusual is how the seating grew. The stadium opened with room for 2,506. By 18 August 2017 — a fortnight after the doors first opened — it staged its first full-capacity match at 5,000. The ground was full to it on 8 March 2025, when Orange County SC met Oakland Roots SC and 5,500 came through the gates. In February 2026 the capacity was set at 5,500 in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup.

Orange County SC have been the main tenants since the stadium opened, playing in the USL Championship. Orange County FC, of the NPSL, also use the ground.

It hosted the 2019 NISA West Coast Championship between California United Strikers FC and LA Force, and in 2022 a U.S. Open Cup second-round tie in which Orange County SC beat LA Force 5-2. The UPSL brought its National Finals here in the autumn of 2023 and again in the autumn of 2024.
