The ground is known as the Big Eye. It sits in the Ōita Sports Park area, away from the busy centre of Ōita City.
Before the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the stand held 43,000 people. When the games were over, 3,000 seats were taken away. That has been the number ever since. The host club, Ōita Trinita, played their first match here in May 2001 and have stayed ever since.
It is not just a football ground. In 2019, the rugby crowd came for the World Cup quarterfinal between England and Australia. The attendance record for club games has not been found, but the World Cup numbers are clear. Sweden played Senegal in front of 39,747 fans, and later England took on Australia with 36,954 in the stands.
There is no need to mention the address or the square footage. It does not pretend to be older than it is, nor does it hide the fact that it was built for strangers who came for a month. The seats are still there, waiting for the next season to begin.
