The stadium sits in the dry heat of Dobsonville, a township on the edge of Johannesburg.
Its character is defined by two distinct periods. It opened in 1975 as a municipal facility for the black population during the apartheid era, built when the city was divided. That history remains in the texture of the place, even if the name on the ticket has changed from the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium to simply Dobsonville. Then came 2009, when the stadium was renovated for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The work cost R69 million and lifted the capacity to 24,000, bringing it up to FIFA specifications. This was the moment it stepped into the global spotlight, hosting training sessions for national teams.
Today, the ground is shared by Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs.
It is a functional arena, owned by the City of Johannesburg and managed by Stadium Management SA.
