Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa
Leiria, Portugal
Formerly: Estádio Municipal de Leiria
The ground went up from nothing for Euro 2004, designed by Tomás Taveira and commissioned by the municipal company Leirisport on behalf of the city. It opened on 19 November 2003 with Portugal against Kuwait, a friendly that finished 9-0, Pauleta taking four and Nuno Gomes three, with Luís Figo alongside them.
The attendance record still belongs to that summer. On 17 June 2004 France drew 2-2 with Croatia in front of 29,160. The club has been the tenant from the opening onwards, apart from 2011 to 2013, when financial trouble pushed it away to other pitches.
What has kept the stadium busy is other people's football. Portugal have returned for qualifiers and friendlies, and the Taça da Liga final has been played here regularly since 2014 and without a break since 2021 — Benfica beating Sporting on penalties in 2024.
The pitch is the recurring problem. Drainage has forced repeated relaying, and large events do the rest: after Rockin' 1000 played in September 2024, the surface was wrecked badly enough that União had to move matches elsewhere. Concerts had already left their mark — Xutos & Pontapés at the Feira de Maio in 2014 and 2017, Tujamo in 2018.
The roof has followed the same pattern. Repairs to worn polycarbonate began in August 2024 at a cost above €500,000. Storm Kristin destroyed the structure outright in January 2026, and €4m was allocated in February 2026 to rebuild it.
