Estadio Ingeniero Hilario Sánchez

The name over the gate has changed twice. When the ground opened on 9 September 1951 it was Estadio 27 de Septiembre — the date Club Atlético San Martín was founded, and the name it carried for more than four decades. In 1995 the club settled on that founding date again. Then, in 2006, it went back to Estadio Ingeniero Hilario Sánchez.

Sánchez Rodríguez is the reason the ground looks the way it does. He kept goal for San Martín, then ran it as president from 1971 to 1983, and he was an engineer by trade. The concrete terracing that went up through the 1970s and into the 1980s was built under him. He died in 1987; the ground took his name back nineteen years later.

Who actually built the original 1951 structure is not recorded. What survives is the shape those later decades left: a bowl in the north of San Juan holding 26,500, on Calle Mendoza, still on natural grass.

It is a provincial ground that occasionally gets national work. Argentina played Costa Rica here on 26 January 2010, with 16,000 through the turnstiles.
