Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo

The ground has changed its name five times. It opened as Estadio del Barcelona Sporting Club . By 1992 it carried the name of Isidro Romero Carbo. From 2008 it belonged, in signage at least, to a bank — Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha — until the club took the older name back in 2020.

What it was built for and what it became are two different things. Moconsa S.A. raised it between 1985 and 1987 to the designs of Miguel Ángel Valarezo Tumbaco and Ricardo Mórtola, at a cost near 70 million sucres, and it opened on 27 December 1987 against Peñarol with a crowd of some 90,000 — well past the 44,000 to 50,000 it was meant to hold. The government and private lenders paid for an expansion in 1992–93 so that Guayaquil could stage the Copa América, and the rebuilt ground reopened on 23 June 1993 in time for the final between Argentina and Mexico.

The record crowd, 91,230, came in 1997.

Since then the work has been smaller and more specific — an HD screen in 2015, the north and south stands remodelled in 2018, then two million dollars of adaptations before the 2022 Copa Libertadores final, which Flamengo won 3-1 against Athletico Paranaense. The pitch is Bermuda grass, 105 by 68 metres, in the Bellavista district of Tarqui parish.
