Estadio Municipal El Molinón-Enrique Castro «Quini»

Football has been played on this patch of Gijón since at least May 1908, when the first match on the site was recorded — which makes it the oldest professional football ground in Spain. El Molinón, the big mill, after the watermill that once stood here. Real Sporting de Gijón moved in nine years later, in 1917, and the ground was formally reopened with improvements to mark it.

The stadium has been rebuilt around what the era demanded. The 1980–81 expansion, carried out for the 1982 FIFA World Cup, lifted the ground to roughly 45,000 — 16,600 of them seated, the rest standing on the terraces. Two of those World Cup fixtures, West Germany against Algeria and West Germany against Chile, drew 42,000. The same figure came back on 28 June 1995, for a Segunda División relegation play-off against UE Lleida, and it stands as the attendance record.

The terraces went in 1997–98, when the conversion to an all-seater cut the capacity to 25,885. A further project between 2009 and 2011 brought it back up and took the ground to UEFA 3-star standard.

On 28 February 2018, after the death of Enrique Castro «Quini», the city added his name to the ground. The Spain national team has played here too, and the 1920 Copa del Rey Final was staged on this pitch.
